The Bedroom Orchestra
Red Kite Records are pleased to announce yet another new signing to our ever growing band of new artists and recording projects The Bedroom Orchestra!
The Leeds-based singer songwriter, real name Tristan Mackay is also known to the crowds who stop to see his energetic and charismatic performances on Briggate, one of the city’s main shopping areas, as ‘the busker with the trilby’.
Taking the usual route of hustling for small gigs in the hundreds of clubs that are springing up all over the UK, many unpaid, didn’t seem to be working for Tristan. So he took the chance of using Leeds City Council’s openness to buskers to see if he could build an audience for his songs on his own patch, on his own terms and make a few bob at the same time. Well his novel approach worked! He regularly draws crowds of several hundred people to these open air ‘shows’, which have built his reputation to such an extent that his audience now follow him to his growing number of gigs at regular venues across the region.
His adopted name of The Bedroom Orchestra stems from the fact that, as he started out, everything he was doing was in his bedroom; writing, rehearsing, practicing, recording. And, as Tristan says, ‘I just thought it was a nice name really, so I stuck with it.’ The term ‘orchestra’ makes more sense when you see him live. His use of a loop pedal to layer percussion, guitar lines and even vocal harmonies means that it really can sound like a small orchestra in the company of a choir!
The trilby is no mere affectation either; he once also considered a career in magic and is no mean card trickster, his hat being one of his props, and which he is still rather attached to!
His live reputation, allied to his recent, slightly controversial self released EP ‘Live From The Lounge’, where he very convincingly fakes an interview and session with Radio 1’s Jo Whiley in the well-known ‘Live Lounge’ segment of her show (check it out at www.myspace.com/thebedroomorchestra - you’ll be amazed) and his effervescent personality has seen his profile in the North rise dramatically in recent months. The media have begun to pick up on his talents and radio sessions, magazine and press interviews are becoming something of a regular occurrence in the life of this young artist.
However, he is not just a joker and trickster, he is also deadly serious about his song writing and performing. With a clutch of mature, melodic and hook-laden songs, silky guitar skills, a husky, soulful voice, and a steely determination to get his music to as large an audience as possible, he has all the elements of a star in the making. With comparisons already being made with Ray LaMontagne, Jack Johnson and even James Morrison, the name of The Bedroom Orchestra will surely be one to watch in 2008.
The Bedroom Orchestra will be recording the debut album at Red Kite Studio in Spring 2008 for release in the Autumn, but to celebrate both his new contract and the season of Advent taking us to Christmas, the Orchestra has recorded a fun, seasonal EP, entitled Duvet (geddit?!) Know It’s Christmas, that will be available from our website and direct from the man himself at his open air Christmas shows on the Briggate
